Overview
FM Projects were engaged on a lump sum delivery to refurbish and re-construct the entry foyer to the Museum of Australian Democracy better known as Old Parliament House.
The work included the demolition of structures beneath the existing entry to allow for the installation of a disabled lift and ramp to allow better access to the main entry of MOAD for visitors in wheelchairs and disabilities. Additionally a new waterproof membrane, tiling and handrails were installed to the main entry steps of MOAD
Key Challenges
A number key challengers were encountered on the project including working in a building where heritage fabric was to maintained in all cases, noise and dust contained as the building was opened every day and is a major tourist attraction.
Staging and programming of the works were extremely important as the access to the museum was required at all times and a temporary ramp was constructed to allow wheelchair access
The installation of the waterproofing fabric was also critical as was the procurement of the brass handrail with the brass having to be procured from the USA
The project was completed on time and to a very high standard winning the MBA Heritage award in 2010
