Overview

Kokomo’s is a bar restaurant situated on the corner of Bunda Street and Genge street Canberra city. The venue was previously a bar/restaurant on one level. The new venue almost doubled in floor space from 340m2 to 600m2 by introducing a mezzanine floor suspended from the ceiling above and 2 cantilevered balconies. The venue has a large bar and kitchen on ground floor and a second bar on the mezzanine floor. The venue has set a new benchmark for hospitality venues in Canberra, and has received multiple awards since opening in May 2018.

Key Challenges

Kokomo’s is situated in the middle of the CBD so delivery of materials and handling throughout the build was a constant challenge, the offices above the venue are occupied by the Australian Taxation Office and noise restrictions applied before 7.30am or after 6.00pm. Space allowances for hoarding around the perimeter of the venue had to be kept to a minimum to allow pedestrian walkways, this made building the external balconies extremely challenging. Many of the finishes were custom finishes from France, Italy, USA and Russia and needed careful consideration to ensure materials arrived on time to meet our program. By working closely with our architect and client we were able to achieve the delivery of a highly detailed project in the middle of the city on time and on budget and to the highest level of quality.
